Beats

UK, 2018, 101mins, Cert.18

Film description

It’s 1994, and best mates Johnno and Spanner share a deep bond: their love of electronic dance music. On the cusp of adulthood. life is destined to take them in very different directions – but not this summer. The explosion of the free party scene and the largest counter-cultural youth movement in recent history is happening across the UK, and the pair want a taste. In pursuit of one last night together, they journey into an underworld of anarchy and freedom that with brutal and euphoric consequences.

Adapted from a play by Kieran Hurley by director Brian Welsh (In Our Name), and shot in striking black & white, Beats is universal story of friendship, rebellion and the irresistible power of gathered youth, set to a soundtrack as eclectic and electrifying as the scene it gave birth to.

SHOWING AS PART OF GROWING PAINS

Growing pains is a small season, bringing together films that have at their heart stories about young people, their experiences, and their perspectives on the world.

Deaf Jam Fitness – (Junior) Dance Workshop @ KOBY Studio
May 25 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Dance fitness for Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Deaf Jam was created by Catrina Nisbett to improve the health and well-being of the Deaf community through music, dance and social interaction. Workshops are delivered using enjoyable easy-to-follow Hip Hop style dance exercises, communicated in British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English. Catrina is what we call in the deaf community, a ‘CODA’, a child of Deaf adults.

Leeds Deaf Children’s Society subsidises the workshop cost for it’s members.  The ‘Junior’ workshop welcomes those up to the age of 16 – contact for adult workshops starting soon.
